Diwali is the festival of lights, and for many Hindu, Sikh and Jain families in Dubai, cleaning and decorating the home is part of getting ready for it. The hard part is not the cleaning itself. It is the order: a sofa cleaned the day before guests arrive can still be damp, a deep clean done too early collects new dust before the lamps are lit, and the last free weekends before the festival are the first to be booked. This guide works backwards from the date, so each job lands when it makes sense.
When is Diwali 2026, and when should you book?
The main day of Diwali, Lakshmi Puja, falls on Sunday 8 November 2026, and in 2027 Diwali falls on 29 October1. Cleaning and decorating the home are among the customs listed for the festival1, so demand for cleaning rises in the weeks before it.
Book in mid October if you can. You then choose the date that suits the plan below instead of the date that happens to be free. If your home also needs the AC grilles and coil done, mention it at the same time, so one visit covers both.
What should you do three weeks, two weeks, one week and two days before Diwali?
Each step depends on the one before. Decluttering comes first because nobody can deep clean shelves full of things. The deep clean comes before upholstery because dust from cupboards and fittings lands on sofas and carpets. Upholstery comes well before guests because it needs to dry. Decorations come last.
| When (for 8 November 2026) | What to do | Why then |
|---|---|---|
| Three weeks before, around 18 October | Declutter cupboards and wardrobes, decide what goes, book the deep clean and any upholstery, AC or window cleaning | Empty shelves can be cleaned inside, and the best dates are still free |
| Two weeks before, around 25 October | Home deep clean: kitchen, bathrooms, cupboards inside, doors, skirting, light fittings, floors | Late enough to stay clean, early enough to leave room for the rest |
| One week before, around 1 November | Sofas, carpets, rugs and mattresses; windows, glass doors and balcony | Upholstery has days to dry fully; glass is clean before lamps and lights go up |
| Two days before, around 6 November | Dry work only: vacuum, dust, wipe surfaces, polish mirrors, set up decorations and rangoli | No wet cleaning of textiles, nothing that needs time to dry |
| After Diwali | Wax, soot, rangoli powder, sweets crumbs on upholstery | Dealt with early, most of it comes out; left for weeks, some of it sets |
If you only book one thing, book the deep clean in the last week of October. If you book two, add the sofas and carpet cleaning a week before guests.
Why does this year’s cleaning start with the summer dust?
Because a Dubai home reaches October carrying the heaviest dust load of the year. In our own monthly averages from the Copernicus atmospheric reanalysis, airborne PM10 in Dubai reached 178.2 µg/m³ in August, against 60.6 µg/m³ in November2.
That dust is on top of wardrobes, inside light fittings, in window tracks and deep in sofa seams and carpet pile. A regular weekly clean keeps the visible surfaces in order, but it does not reach those places. A home deep clean in Dubai before the festival removes a whole summer of it, and the calmer November air means the home stays cleaner afterwards.
Why should sofas and carpets be cleaned a week before guests?
Because drying time is the part of upholstery cleaning nobody can rush. The IICRC upholstery standard names what decides it: the fibre, the fabric, how much moisture went in, and the temperature and humidity of the room3. It also warns that slow drying can lead to browning, colours bleeding and stains that rise back to the surface as the fabric dries3.
October is still humid. In ten years of hourly data, the outdoor dew point in Dubai was at or above 24 °C in 24 percent of October hours, against 1 percent in November4. A sofa cleaned in late October dries slower than the same sofa a month later, so the week of buffer matters this year more than it would in December.
Before guests arrive, a quick vacuum is all upholstery needs. For spills during the festivities, blot rather than rub, and dry the spot quickly: Dubai Municipality advises cleaning and drying liquid spills on porous surfaces such as carpet within 24 hours5. Our sofa cleaning in Dubai page explains how we choose the method for each fabric, and the guide to sofa cleaning codes shows what the label on your sofa really tells you.
What needs cleaning in the kitchen before the festive cooking?
The parts that collect grease and will collect much more: the hood filters, the hob and its surround, the oven, the tiles behind the stove and the cupboard fronts near it. Fried snacks and sweets made at home in large batches put a lot of oil into the air, and it settles on whatever is already sticky.
Clean the cupboards where sweets, dry fruit and gifts will be stored, and check the fridge inside before it fills up. Degreased hood filters also draw better, which makes a difference when the kitchen runs for hours. If you are wondering whether your home needs a full deep clean or only the kitchen, our guide to what a home deep clean includes lists the difference.
How do you deal with diyas, candles and rangoli afterwards?
Plan for them before you light the first lamp. Most festival marks are easy if you know what they are and treat them dry first.
- Wax from diyas and candles. Let it harden, then lift it with a blunt plastic scraper. On tiles and stone the rest usually comes off with warm water. On carpets and upholstery, stop after scraping, because heat and solvents can spread wax or move colour.
- Soot. Oil lamps leave a fine dark film on ceilings, walls and cupboard fronts directly above them. Do not rub it with a wet cloth first, which smears it. Dry dusting first, then a gentle wash.
- Rangoli powder. Vacuum the dry powder and keep water away until it is gone. Wet pigment can behave like dye in grout lines, unsealed stone and carpet pile. Some colours on porous surfaces stay. A protective sheet under rangoli on a light rug avoids the question.
- Oil and ghee. Blot drips immediately, especially on fabric and unsealed wood. Tell your cleaner later what was spilled where, because it changes the method.
Does the AC need cleaning before guests arrive?
If it has run all summer without attention, it is worth checking before a full house. More people, more cooking and lamps burning for hours put the AC to work, and a grille that blows dust or a unit that smells when it starts is noticed by every guest.
Start with what you can see: the filter, the grilles and any drips below the indoor unit. Dubai Municipality’s indoor air guideline advises cleaning condensate trays at least every month and coils at least every six months5. If yours have not been touched since spring, book the AC with the deep clean in the last week of October, so one visit covers both and the dust from the AC work is cleaned up the same day. Our AC cleaning in Dubai page explains what that visit includes.
How should you prepare for the cleaning team?
Clear what you want to keep out of the way, and say what matters most. A deep clean goes faster and deeper when cupboards are emptied, puja items and anything fragile, valuable or sacred to you are put away or pointed out, and surfaces are free of decorations.
Tell the team about anything delicate: brass and silver that should not get a general cleaner, a marble floor, an heirloom rug, a sofa with a known stain. In a tower, book the service lift and arrange any NOC from building management before the day, and tell the team where to park. In the busy weeks before a festival, a morning lost at the gate is hard to make up.
What can you do yourself, and what is worth booking?
Do the sorting, the decluttering, the daily surfaces and the decorating yourself. Book what needs machines, time to dry or hours you do not have in the busiest weeks of the year.
| Job | Yourself | Worth booking |
|---|---|---|
| Decluttering, sorting cupboards | Yes | No |
| Surfaces, mirrors, daily floors | Yes | Part of a deep clean if you book one |
| Kitchen deep clean, hood filters, oven | Possible, takes most of a day | Yes, if time is short |
| Bathrooms, limescale, grout | Partly | Yes, for grout and limescale |
| Sofas, carpets, mattresses | Vacuuming only | Yes, a week before guests |
| Windows, glass doors, balcony | Inside glass | Outside and tracks, where reachable safely |
| AC grilles, coil and tray | Filter only | Yes, by a technician |
Whatever you book, ask for a fixed price for a written scope and a date that fits the countdown, not just the first free slot.
